Although I personally don't think it matters what way you express it, because Pride is a protest at its core, and members are pushing back against things they feel they are criticised unfairly for, all of the Prides that I have been to have had lots of elements of family- and health-focus, and have been as much about care for the community and creating a place of safety and normality for e.g.

I don't get on board with that kind of attitude. Loud minorities are understood to have less influence than they appear to in other mediums or groups, but at gay events, are still used to justify criticism of the group as a whole. It's something I keep in mind, and it helps me accept different ways that people express their pride which may be unfamiliar to me.Īnother thing I keep in mind is that, the people that Pride celebrations get criticised for, are just a loud minority. As a gay man, I am indeed proud: proud to be. Pride Month, which began Tuesday, is always a bittersweet time for me. June marks Pride month around the world, where people celebrate diversity and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community. What I always remember about pride is that it started as a pushback against gay shame, which was pushed everywhere as a feeling that gay people should feel. By Luai Qubain, author of 'The Kingdoms Sandcastle'. I'd like to hear your perspectives as well. Pride Month commemorates all of the tough history, lives lost, and struggles experienced, while also celebrating the wins. I used to think gay pride wasn't important, but that changed as I got older. I mean the reality is it's just a nice day and an excuse to go to a fun event outside, but I like to imagine it's more than that. I still get shouted at walking down the street for holding my boyfriends hand. I also go because although legally I feel accepted, socially I feel it is not. Now I attend it partly out of spite for them, and partly out of making up to my past self for being afraid of ending up on the streets. Pride Month is a celebration of the LGBT community and happens every June to commemorate the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village, New York City, in 1969. My parents found out, and I went back into the closest for many years. My first time trying to go to a pride parade was grade 10. To join the large crowds and show all those who may be stuck in the closet due to their family situation. The parade is now mostly a family event for a fun day outside after the march.įor me, it's important because of visibility. My question refers to pride parades, but if you want to answer about gay pride in general, go for it :).Ĭanada has had gay marriage for years, and we're pretty covered by the law as far as equal rights go. It's pride month, and the pride parade is tomorrow for me. As soon as June 1 hit, brands switched social media avatars to rainbow-hued versions, made posts in solidarity and released a slew of Pride-themed products.
